Did you know that...

...when your computer is infected with a virus you may not see any obvious symptoms. Some of the obvious symptoms:
- Your PC is slow and unresponsive;
- Programs are not functioning the way they used to;
- Your files may become corrupt and unrecoverable, perhaps even stolen;
- You may get pop-ups telling you that you're infected and that you can get rid of the virus by "clicking here", and that could be a hoax antivirus.

We took part in the Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

In our monthly newsletter we recommended the Hunters Hill Big Morning Tea as one of the biggest in the area. We went and were really impressed. Over 140 people came on the day; there was a live as well as silent auction going, with lots of nice items to bid on; there were raffle tickets with fantastic prizes, great food, and a lovely atmosphere with live entertainment.

The numbers haven't been finalized yet, but we've heard that they are probably going to be better than the incredible $20,000 raised last year. A big CONGRATS goes to Jacqueline Stene and Amanda Lee, who have done a really fantastic job.

We had a very good time on the day and are very proud to be one of the major supporters. Besides donating for the silent auction, we've donated the Hunters Hill Big Morning Tea web site and all work associated with it. It was an ongoing project, running for a month, and Alisa had a lot of fun working on it. It was for a great cause and we're hoping it has contributed to this year's Hunters Hill Big Morning Tea success.

We've met ESET Australia

On 30th April, ESET launched its products as Software as a Service (SaaS). Although having a tech name, it is basically the same ESET NOD32 Antivirus and Smart Security, only being offered on a monthly subscription basis. The prices start from as little as $5.99 per month for NOD32 Antivirus and $10.99 per month for Smart Security. There are no contracts (you pay for what you use), updates are automatic, and there are no annoying renewal or payment reminders from me :) To learn more about ESET SaaS or to buy it, please visit our Online Store.

As part of the launch, ESET has organized a roadshow across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. One of the roadshows was held at North Sydney Anzac Club on 25th May. As resellers, we were invited to come along, meet the team, and put faces to names we've been dealing with for years. We met Meyer Diedericks - Channel Manager, ESET Australia and Mike Swart - Marketing Director, ESET SaaS Australia; several members of press were also present as well as a few Sydney based ESET resellers.

Eurobyte with ESET Australia

We've learnt a great deal about ESET SaaS and believe it offers a way to keep your IT expenses reasonable, without having to downgrade to "free" antivirus solutions. In other words, it is a seriously-think-about for businesses and home users with tight IT budgets wishing to maintain high level of protection.

Morning tea event hoping for another top fundraiser

To The POINT With JACQUELINE STENE

THE WONDERFUL community of Hunters Hill, Gladesville, Boronia Park and surrounding areas last year raised an astounding $20,000 at the Cancer Council's Australia's Biggest Morning Tea.

We visited CeBIT Australia 2009

CeBIT Australia CeBIT Australia is a 3 day business event featuring the leading information and communication technology (ICT) industry exhibition in Asia Pacific and Global Conferences covering the full spectrum of business technologies. This time we only visited the exhibition. We saw names we see every year such as Optus and CSIRO. We saw lots of vendors offering web and Internet based products and services such as ADSL Internet and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for web sites. Google was one of this year's major sponsors with quite significant presence. We also saw a lot of vendors offering mobile computing solutions.

It looks like more and more traditional business functions are being converted into e-functions, with mobility being Net-topa very important feature. Another important feature is size. As with mobile phones, computing devices are getting smaller. The latest buzz word is 'net-top' - next generation low-power/low-cost unit. It's environmentally friendly, with low power consumption; it's great if space is an issue and is also great as a home entertainment PC as it can easily be hidden at the back of your TV while at the same time running all your applications. It is a small out-of-the-way box about the size of a book... I guess the picture on the right says it all.

Proudly supporting Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

This year we're one of the major supporters of Hunters Hill Big Morning Tea. Jacqueline Stene and Friends have been organising the fundraiser in Hunters Hill as part of the Biggest Morning Tea for past 7 years. Last year alone they managed to raise a fabulous $20,000 and were ranked 4th in the top 30 NSW community fundraisers.

This year Eurobyte has donated the web site, all work associated with it, domain name and web hosting for as long as Jacqueline and Friends need it. They were very excited when they heard about our donation as, in their opinion, it will put their fundraising efforts to a whole different level and possibly attract more sponsors. Visit their web site at www.bigmorningtea.com.au and check what these fantastic people are up to (if you wish you can even donate online). In addition to the web site, we've also donated (for the silent auction) a 20" Samsung wide screen LCD monitor.

Btw if you're wondering how come the Hunters Hill Big Morning Tea web site looks a lot like the Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, Jacqueline has obtained a special permission from the Cancer Council to have her site look like it does this year.

Alisa is officially joining Eurobyte

After being made redundant in January 2009, Alisa decided she's going to join Eurobyte full-time in a consultant as well as office manager capacity. It just happened and we're very happy about it and believe that our customers as well as our team will benefit from this decision.

So what are we up to these days?

At the moment, we are working on adding value to our services by improving your experience as our customer. We've realized that in the past we failed to respond to a number of clients' inquiries in a timely manner, sometimes not responding at all. If that happened to you, we deeply apologize and would like to assure you that we're working towards fixing it. Our main goal is to improve inquiry response time, aiming towards a response time of no more than one hour from the time your inquiry is placed, so we're implementing new processes that will make this happen. You may be thinking right now: "Gosh! One hour?! Nah, that's not good enough." Please don't forget that we are a mostly-on-the-road business, which makes it difficult to respond to all phone calls and emails immediately, so 'up to one hour' is not too bad for a business like ours. Apparently, we're not alone in this. "A recent study by Performark (a USA research company) showed how few companies follow up properly or even at all. They found that out of 10,000 advertising enquiries made:

  • 22% of enquirers never received the information they requested
  • 57% received the information more than 65 days after their request
  • 87% were never contacted by a sales representative." (source: flyingsolo.com.au)

That's an astounding piece of statistics and we hope that we're doing better than that. No, we are definitely doing better than that. You agree?

Fundraiser to help victims of bushfire in Victoria

Devastating bushfires in Victoria have left hundreds of families without homes and in many cases without loved ones. Since coming from the part of the world ravaged by a war we know very well how it feels loosing everything overnight, although we're lucky not to have lost any family member or friend. We know that nothing but the time can heal these wounds, but as a small help with these horrific events Eurobyte is organising a fundraiser that starts NOW and finishes on Sunday 15/03 at 10pm. All money raised goes to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009.

We are selling heavily discounted computer parts and accessories, so if you're interested in grabbing a bargain for a good cause please visit our fundraiser web page for details. There you'll also find a number of terrific (and discounted) products and services donated by local small businesses, and we'd like to take this opportunity to thank their owners for kindly joining this fundraiser. THANKS GUYS!

If yo're a business owner and would like to join this event please contact us to discuss.

In additin to the fundraiser, Eurobyte will also donate $5 from every sale it makes this month (March 2009).

Thank you for your support.

We haven't written anything for quite a while

Alisa, who's our writer, editor, and web admin, had a baby last year after a very difficult pregnancy, so Eurobyte decided to give her a break and postpone web site updates and publications of our written material until she's ready to work with us again.

She was busy this year looking after her baby, finishing her thesis at UNSW, and organising the 1st birthday party for her baby, which btw was organised as a fundraiser for NAPCAN (National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect). The party was on last month and she was able to raise an incredible $1,205. Also last month she completed requirements for her Software Engineering degree.

We just heard that she's planning to be back on board early next year.

Windows Vista

It's big, it's ambitious and, after five years of development, it's (finally) here, being available to consumers since the end of January. Is it a look into the future? Should you upgrade your system to meet its considerable hardware demands? Early Vista adopters report that Vista is offering much promise but still has many problems to resolve. Those who bought Vista preinstalled on new systems were less likely to report problems than those who upgraded older machines. But how useful and how pleasurable it is to work with? In these respects, Windows Vista is a winner:

  1. It's beautiful (the new Aero interface definitely lives up to Microsoft's "The 'Wow' starts now" marketing campaign).
  2. It offers improved, fast and smart search.
  3. It features improved security including a firewall and an anti-spyware program (but you still need to get your own anti-virus software).
  4. It offers great networking capabilities and...
  5. It's just plain fun to use.

Q Which version of Vista should I get?

A You shouldn't get Home Basic, which lacks the Aero interface and other features that make Vista exciting. Home Premium will be fine for most people who don't need to connect to corporate Windows servers. Those using their PC mostly for business will be fine with the Business edition. However, if you want to do both connect to your company's server during the day and record TV shows at night, you should go for the top-of-the-line Vista Ultimate. And be forewarned: The hardware requirements for the best features are high.

Ethernet Over Power (EOP)

Most people think of power lines as having the sole purpose of providing electricity to their homes. But they are more sophisticated than what you think.

Ethernet Over Power lets you network your PCs and peripheral devices over standard electrical circuits in the home or office without having to run new cables. With networking through power lines you can add wireless access to almost anywhere in your home - exactly where you need it. You can create a LAN over the home or office power points without the expense and complexity of dedicated network cabling, or you can add wireless connectivity to an existing wired LAN - again without drilling or cabling. And most importantly - you can overcome wireless 'dead spots'. Therefore, it could be comfortably used within the home to provide high-speed connectivity around a large house or from the main house to an outlying building such as a garage or work shed. Similarly, it could be used for a business, and would be particularly suited where the environment could cause interference to a wireless network. In addition, it is ideal for use in situations where network cabling could not be installed - for example in heritage buildings, or structures with solid concrete walls or floors.

How does, for example, EOP Internet work?

You simply plug an Internet modem into an EOP device and you can immediately share broadband Internet access to any room with a power point.

Typical applications in the home or office

  • Share centrally stored data

  • Share a printer

  • Provide shared access to one Internet connection

  • Connect multiple gaming users over a network

  • Extend a ADSL or Cable modem connection

Viruses

Haven't heard of NOD32? Well it’s time you do, considering that it has the best virus detection track record out there. It's even more effective at catching viruses than Symantec and McAfee, which many people entrust everything to.

How does NOD32 compare?

You may be wondering how NOD32 compares to the other antivirus products which are available. Considering the amount of time that it takes to scan the computer, it's far ahead of the rest.

The program takes up very little space on your hard drive, only a few megabytes, although this is something that nearly all antivirus programs share. The real benefit comes in the amount of memory used when NOD32 is running.

NOD32 has achieved 39 Virus Bulletin VB 100% awards, more than any other vendor. In Virus Bulletin's comparative tests, NOD32 has not missed one single 'In the Wild' virus sample over the last 8 years (second chart below shows period May 1998 – Dec 2005).

Part of the reason for its success is the fact that the program is constantly retrieving updates. By default, NOD32 will check for updates every hour and download anything new. These constant updates, which are only a few kilobytes in size, keep your system protected. Most other products don't offer updates daily, or they don't check for updates automatically.

  SECURITY TIPS
1 Avoid unknown websites and don’t click links in unsolicited email.
2 Remain suspicious of email attachments, even when a message seems to come from someone you know.
3Cycle passwords, and don’t use the same user name and password at multiple sites.
4 Don’t trust an unsolicited email from any company, no matter how good it looks.
5 Type in your bank’s URL yourself or use a bookmark; avoid clicking an email link.
6 Look for a padlock icon, which indicates a secure site, in the browser’s toolbar, not the webpage.
7 Disable “open” Bluetooth on your mobile phone or PDA to close down the most common infection route.
8 Keep an eye on your itemized mobile phone bill for unexpected charges.
9 Use a mobile antivirus program (for mobile phones and PDAs).
10 Keep your operating system fully up-to-date and patched.

How well are you protected?

It’s been a while since we’ve been able to neatly classify security threats into distinct categories. Now-a-days worms may ride in with spam, and spyware applications may unleash Trojan horses. Security threats have become so complex that it takes a multifaceted strategy to fight them, so your PC requires multiple kinds of security software to stay safe.

Spying eyes

Spyware is malicious software that monitors and takes partial control of your computer without your permission. Spyware is most commonly hidden in “harmless” downloads such as screensavers, games, and browser toolbars, or even attached to emails. It’s not unusual that websites offering free anti-spyware software actually install spyware on your PC. Spyware can also be installed on your computer just by visiting unknown websites. If you “catch” a spyware, every keystroke, every website you’re visiting, and every conversation you’re having could be recorded or monitored. If you’re being bombarded with pop-up ads, your homepage is changed, new toolbars or icons appear on your desktop without explanation, or your computer becomes annoyingly slow – then it is most likely that you have spyware on your PC.

Most people are under the impression they’re protected by their anti-virus software. But anti-virus programs do not remove spyware or protect you from identity theft. What you need is a legitimate and trusted anti-spyware program that has daily updates and provides real-time protection (i.e. works while you’re surfing the net). Free anti-spyware software doesn’t offer this level of support and protection.

Security vendor Panda Software alerted to a free web browser called Browsezilla that claims to be a privacy protection tool, but also secretly installs adware* that opens a series of adult web pages, which are not visible to the user. Interestingly its name and lizard-like logo remind of the open source Mozilla products, cashing in on the Mozilla’s growing popularity.

*ADWARE: monitors and profiles your web usage and directs pop-up ads to your PC, based on what it “thinks” you like.

Large phone bills? VoIP may be the solution

“Many of our customers asked for VoIP information, so we've
decided to repeat our VoIP story published in the last month's
newsletter but adding new, and hopefully useful, details.”
eurobyte bull@in Team

A few months ago my large phone bill was due to be paid and I couldn’t help but think: “I have to dosomething about this. Next month I should start cutting the calls and/or calls duration. I could also buy a phone card more often.”

I used to think: “Wouldn’t it be great not to worry so much about who I call, how often I call them, and how long my conversations are?” And I used to dream about having my very own phone card.

Then I discovered VoIP.

What is VoIP and how can you benefit from it?

Voice over IP (VoIP) is a way to bypass the standard telephone network and send digital voice transmissions across the Internet. This means bypassing traditional telecommunication companies. And the result?  Cheaper phone calls.

Ever wondered why your calls are so much cheaper when using phone cards? It’s because phone cards providers are using VoIP and that allows them to offer fantastic call rates. So with your own VoIP you can not only bypass traditional telcos, but you can even make cheaper-than-cheap-phone-card calls.

With VoIP, you can use one number anywhere in the world and make calls from wherever you have broadband connectivity. So if you’re traveling, you can always have access to your home phone and make calls at the same price as if you were at home.

And it gets even better! Calls between VoIP users that use the same VoIP Service Provider are free.

What do you need to make VoIP calls?

  • A broadband Internet connection – preferably ADSL (at least 512 kbps down/128 kbps up).
  • An account with a VoIP Service Provider.
  • VoIP hardware to convert voice for transmission over the Internet (Quality of Service or QoS feature recommended).

What happens with your phone number?

You will keep your existing phone number, so that you can still receive calls from people using the number listed in the telephone books/known to friends, relatives etc.

Additionally, your VoIP Service Provider can provide a VoIP phone number called DID (Direct Inward Dialing). If you’re on a free VoIP plan, DID can be provided on request at a small monthly charge (usually $5). If, however, you’re on a VoIP plan that has a monthly fee, DID comes for free.

What our customers are saying

“The emergence of VOIP was very intriguing to me because it meant a revolutionary step in the technological development of telecommunications. I wanted to try it because I was curious as well as because of its supposed benefits. After using it for several months I can say that I’m happy with calls quality and with the fact that my phone bills have been cut by circa 50% So I would definitely recommend it. I can hardly imagine anyone being disappointed with this service.”

The future of home entertainment

Do you download movies and music? Would you like to surf the Internet or watch your downloads and your digital photos on your TV instead of your PC? Do you have a DVD and/or CD collection that you’d like to back up and also be able to browse and play quickly with virtually a press on a button?

Many believe that DVD players will soon become devices of past, much the same as VHS or even CD players have become. So what will replace them? Now you’re probably thinking “Oh no! A new technology again?” Well, not really. We rather call it a variation of existing one. It’s the concept of the PC becoming the hub of your home entertainment.

With your multimedia PC you can access on-demand entertainment services such as Telstra’s recently launched BigPond Movies. You can watch, record, pause and rewind live TV both standard and high definition (and yes, it comes with a remote). You can listen to FM radio. You can watch your DVDs or listen to your CDs and you can also back up your favourites or, in some cases, all of your DVDs and CDs since the PC comes with large hard drive(s). You can watch your digital photos from the comfort of your living room, or turn it into a home theatre with support for up to 7.1 channel surround sound. You can surf the Internet or do your computer work without ever leaving your living room. So you can have a PC with a custom multimedia specification that’s about ensuring you get all the features you need in a home entertainment system.

Some of you may be feeling that all these features are simply too much. You may like the idea of sitting in your lounge watching downloaded movies or music clips. You may also think it wouldn’t be bad at all to share photos with your friends but not having to take them to your small and crowded home office. You may as well like the possibility of backing up your favourite DVDs and CDs and at the same time have a collection of movies and songs that you can easily browse and play without leaving your comfy sofa. If this sounds more like it, if you don’t think you’d need all those features a multimedia PC can offer, then you may consider buying a digital media player instead. It’s small in size, it's portable so you can take it with you on holidays or business trips, it’s cheaper than a multimedia PC, it comes with a remote control, and it lets you easily browse and play your digital media. You can almost think of your multimedia player as a (typically) large external hard drive with added multimedia functionality.

Large phone bills? VoIP may be the solution

A few months ago my large phone bill was due to be paid and I couldn’t help but think: “I have to do something about this.

So with your own VoIP you can not only bypass traditional telcos, but you can even make cheaper-than-cheap-phone-cards calls.

With VoIP, you can use one number anywhere in the world and make calls from wherever you have broadband connectivity. So if you’re traveling, you can always have access to your home phone and make calls at the same price as if you were at home.
